Dear Class of '78,

In the annual report of the The Wausau School Foundation, the Class of 1978 was described as "a class act."

When we set up registration for last year's class reunion, we had an option for donations to a class memorial scholarship. The memorial scholarship was to honor our classmates who have passed away. By the end of our reunion weekend, we had collected $500, enough money for two scholarships - one in 2009 and one planned for 2010.

Last spring, we determined that we would direct the fund to a graduate of the Wausau East Academic Enrichment program. This program provides extra tutorial and social support to a group of 64 Wausau East students who, without support, are at risk of dropping out of high school.

On May 13th, Jim Nick had the honor of presenting the scholarship to this year's recipient, on behalf of the class. The young man who received this year's scholarship is very grateful, and will be using his scholarship to attend a diesel mechanic school. While it might not seem like much money, it provided funds for his application and it was the was the first time in the 17-year history of the program that a scholarship was given to a student graduating from the Academic
Enrichment program.

There are sufficient funds to award next year's scholarship, but we are moving forward with establishing an endowed memorial scholarship. To do this, we will need to raise a total of $5,000 in new funds. $1,000 in new funds have already been given, leaving additional $4,000 to be raised over the next 15 months. The fund, to be collected through and held by the Wausau School Foundation, will yield enough interest for annual scholarships.
